DIMAPUR, JUNE 18 (MExN): Expressing concern over massive inundation in several areas of Dimapur after a heavy downpour, Er. Keneilhoulie Keditsu, Chief Advisor, Dimapur Municipal Council has stated that said flash flood of last Thursday that struck the commercial hub was a wake up call for citizens and that the public should take a serious note and realize what is causing the inundation. Er. Keditsu warned that Dimapur could face even more severe flood problem in future if adequate measures are not taken up in time.
He rued people have the right to throw blame at one another but at the same citizens should become civilized, have a change of attitude and develop more civic sense and also realize what are the causes that are leading to such flood.
Pointing out that encroachment over drains, improper culverts across the roads and rampant dumping of garbage into drains by the residents are three main reasons which are primarily causing inundation, he asked who are to be blamed and reiterated that it is time for all including the public to act jointly to tackle problem which is already posing serious threat for Dimapur. He disclosed that in some location telecom wire and pipes through the middle of the culvert are obstructing the flow of water.
Commenting on the initiatives of DMC, Chief Advisor maintained that DMC may not have been upto the people’s expectation despite putting in its all out effort to keep the city garbage free and for which he attributed to lack of cooperation from the citizens. He, however, mentioned that DMC’s garbage collection has doubled in volume since last year besides enforcing special task force to clear the garbage from drains.
Assured that DMC would continue to do its best to keep the town clean he said realization and co-operation is expected from the public. DMC will also carry out drain expansion drive, he added. Chief advisor further stated that DMC would meet the GBs of Dimapur in full strength and have serious discussion and entrust them to assist the civic body for maintaining cleanliness and hygiene.
