In an impromptu raid on meat marketers around town, the Dimapur Naga Students' Union (DNSU) today apprehended 17 sellers of chicken meat, charging beyond the fixed Dimapur Municipal Council’s (DMC) rate.
With the help of the Commissioner of Police, Limasunep Jamir IPS, two police personnel from East Police Station were deployed along with the members.
The team - led by DNSU Vice President, Sentimeren Pongen, and General Secretary, B Mhajan Tsopoe - raided New Market, Supermarket, Nagarjan junction and Railway bazaar. The raid started around 3:00 pm.
The apprehended sellers were charging Rs. 200 to Rs. 220 against the fixed rate of Rs. 180 for Broiler (dressed) meat.
Pongen said the much needed raid was carried out under public complaints of meat marketers charging well above the revised rate fixed by the DMC.
The Union also urged consumers to be aware of the fixed rates of the varied items, so that they are not manipulated.
With this act becoming the Union’s first inspection for 2019, DNSU held that they will be carrying out raids on different items too in the near future.
They acknowledged Commissioner of Police, Limasunep Jamir, Officer in-charge, East Police Station, police personnel and DMC Administrator, Moa Sangtam.

The apprehendees were later released after stern warnings, the Union said. Meanwhile, the seized chicken meat was donated to orphanage homes around town.
