State govt pushing for setting up medical college in Nagaland
He also announced that the State Government will take up the matter of setting up a medical college in the state, to the highest level but admitted that it is facing some problems in convincing the Central Government to pour in funds for the purpose. The state government has taken up the issue at the highest level including the Planning Commission during the commission’s visit to the state recently. He mentioned that the State is hopeful that the rupees 400 crore project would be a reality soon. Acknowledging the fact that some 200-plus general practitioners and dental students are presently pursuing studies at different institutions across the country, he urged them not to worry about getting jobs back in Nagaland, assuring that the state government is doing everything in its power to accommodate them.
Emphasizing on the question of getting faculty for a medical college, he added that it also poses another big problem, once such a medical college becomes a reality; he encouraged the future medical professionals to seriously consider careers in the medical teaching faculty. “The faculty will have to come locally”, he challenged. He also announced that the state Cabinet has decided that the compulsory length of service to qualify for post-graduate studies would be done away with and that henceforth, every deserving candidate will be eligible to go for PG studies. Commissioner & Secretary also released the biennial magazine of the NMSA entitled ‘Genesis’.
