The Ferrando Domestic Workers Alliance run by The Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians distributed essential items to domestic workers (daily wage earners) in Kohima.
“When the nationwide lockdown started many of them were not able to earn their daily wages. And they are finding it difficult. It may be a little bit only but we wanted to give them,” said Sister Theresa Langhu while also mentioning that the distribution is mainly targeted to those whose earnings have stopped and are desperately in need. Essential items such as Dal, soap, potato and 5 kg of rice were given to each beneficiary.
The Alliance began the distribution on April 21 and has distributed in D Block, Seikhazou, Perizie, Tinpatti, Bayavü, Kenuozou and Kezieke wards.
“My husband is a taxi driver and we have two kids. When the lockdown was announced it became difficult to manage the household,” said A, a domestic worker from Assam who resides at Kezieke. Carrying her baby, she collected her ration while also noting that 5 kg of rice lasts for three days at the most. With much difficulty, the family was helped by neighbours and relatives in the neighborhood. “Even with the little, we are trying to help each other,” remarks A.
With assistance from Kohima Deputy Commissioner the team has distributed to almost 174 domestic workers.
