Nagaland has been endowed with rich natural resources. Each village has rivers/rivulets mostly feasible for hydropower project at micro/mini level, according to the new & renewable energy department. Source said with the formation of this department, preliminary survey and investigation of potential hydropower projects was undertaken in full swing, adding that it will be an ongoing process. Altogether, 21 feasible sites for hydro projects have been identified and pre-feasibility report was prepared and the same has been submitted to the Ministry.
A detailed project report was also prepared for Tsutsung MHP with an installed capacity of 1000W. “It is envisaged that through the development of hydropower projects in the state, there is huge scope for employment generation, various livelihood options for communities, attaining energy security, environmental protection and preservation of forest especially in catchment areas,” the department stated.
The proposed projects, the department said, is incorporated with community participation to develop sense of ownership thereby, enhancing sustainability of the project once the project is commissioned in the near future. It is also proposed that any micro/mini/SHP taken up by the department will be a standalone or grid connected mode of generation. Here, surplus energy may be fed to state grid for revenue generation, the department said.
