Dimapur, December 15 (MExN): With the hope to highlighting and bringing solutions to their grievances, a new association by students from the eastern regions of Nagaland has been instated. The organization in the name and style of “Eastern Nagaland College Students’ Union” (ENCSU), formally declared its existence today, December 15. The ‘ENCSU’ has 18 office bearers with Tuensang as the association’s headquarter.
Addressing Media persons at a press conference today in Dimapur, the president of the newly-formed organization AS Amos K said that the quality of infrastructure and education is ‘not up to the mark in the eastern region.’ By forming the ENCSU, he claimed, it will take initiative in working for the development of ‘eastern Nagaland’ students.
The ENCSU president also said that the people who are facing the problems understand the situation better than others do. The main grievances pointed out by the ENCSU are lack of infrastructure, sanitation, shortage of lecturers and less honors course in Sao Chang College Tuensang. For the past three years Wangkhao Government College in Mon has been running without a principal, leaving the vice-principal to take up all the responsibilities.
It was also informed that the decision to form ENCSU under the patronage of Eastern Nagaland Students’ Federation was taken during a 2-day conclave, November 16-17 at Niuland, Dimapur.
Some of the office bearers also disclosed that the representation by All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) for the ‘eastern region’ was unsatisfactory, which prompted them to form a union of their own. This way their grievances would be addressed well by the authorities in concern. However, the ENCSU is willing to work with the ANCSU in future ‘if situation compels.’
Concerning membership, all students from ‘eastern Nagaland’ studying in various colleges in Nagaland can be members of the ENCSU and are forbidden to contest in the ANCSU elections. However, they are allowed to contest in their respective colleges’ unions.
Also, according to the ENCSU executive meeting held on December 14, it was agreed that the union would visit colleges in the eastern regions of Nagaland.
When queried whether the new union was formed in relation to the demand for ‘separate state’ floated by the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organization, they said that their entire objective is for the welfare of students.
