In a significant move to enhance disaster preparedness and climate resilience, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) launched ‘ELIONA’, a supercomputer designed for data-driven disaster risk reduction, real-time monitoring and evidence-based decision-making.

The system was inaugurated at Nagaland Centre for Disaster Management & Atmospheric Research (NaCDAR) in Kohima by Nagaland NSDMA & NRE Advisor Z Nyusietho Nyuthe on May 21.

“The launch of ELIONA marks a significant step in the efforts of the NSDMA to strengthen disaster preparedness, climate resilience, scientific research and technology-based governance in the state,” Nyuthe said.

“Because of its terrain, rainfall pattern, seismic sensitivity, and exposure to landslides, flash floods, thunderstorms, and other hazards, Nagaland requires strong systems for monitoring, analysis, early warning, and timely response,” he said. Stating that ELIONA has been established to support this need, Nyuthe said, “With its high-performance computing capacity, ELIONA will enable the processing of large volumes of meteorological, satellite, terrain, climate, and disaster-related data.”

It will support advanced weather modelling, rainfall prediction, landslide and flood analysis, geospatial hazard mapping, climate risk assessment and artificial intelligence-based applications, he said. “This facility will also strengthen important initiatives of NSDMA, including the Nagaland State Disaster Management Information System, disaster risk financing, parametric insurance, damage and loss assessment, urban resilience planning, and community-based preparedness,” the Advisor added.

Nyuthe stated that ELIONA’s true value lies in its field-level application, supporting district-level decisions, communities, and the protection of lives, livelihoods, infrastructure, and public assets. He urged NSDMA, line departments, technical institutions, and all stakeholders to fully utilize the platform. Hoping it will strengthen forecasting, planning, assessment and resilient development in Nagaland, he called for using ELIONA not just as a technological achievement but as a means to serve the people more effectively.
