‘Enhancing status of women’

Mokokchung: A one day seminar on ‘Marriage, Divorce and Inheritance’, organized by Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) in collaboration with National Commission for Women was held at  Mokokchung Town Hall  on May 21 aiming at enhancing status of women without creating conflict with the unique Naga customary laws.

In her introductory remarks, Asangla Cholong, NSCW Member said that the objective of the seminar is to attract more discussions involving intellectuals, leaders of various organizations, Village council chairmen etc  on empowerment of women saying that status of women ‘our own mothers, sisters and daughters’ is still far from what they deserved in society. Accepting that ‘our’ customary laws is very unique she said  without confronting its uniqueness it is high time to ponder whether there is space to accommodate women ‘within the unique system’ to enable them to play bigger role.

DC Mokokchung, Murohu Chotso while exhorting the participants, thanked the NSCW for organizing the seminar on such important issues in Mokokchung town and hoped that it would open eyes and ears towards women status and their empowerment reasonably. He also shared his views on the subject.

Temsumeren, P.A to D. C Mokokchung, Dr. Sangyu Yaden, Ao Senden President, Lemtimenba, President AKM, Marlepden, President GBs Union, Mokokchung district, and President Ward’s chairman dwelt at length on the topic followed by discussions.

Asangla Cholong said that before Mokokchung, the NSCW conducted seminar on the same topic in eight districts and the remaining two districts will be covered shortly. NSCW Member Mrs. Kakheli Jakhalu presided over the programme.
