The Dimapur police have busted a fake COVID-19 test racket. As per a press release from the Dimapur police PRO, an employee of a passenger bus transport agency was arrested on January 22 during an undercover operation.
The operation was conducted based on information that “fake COVID-19 test reports are being issued to passengers travelling to Manipur” at the bus station located in Golaghat Road, Dimapur. The release said that police personnel disguised as passengers “in need of negative COVID-19 test report” were sent to the location from where one Mohammad Samung (39 years) was arrested along with fake COVID-19 test reports issued from Lahorijan.
It said that the accused, who works for IMA Travels (Dimapur to Imphal), offered the undercover personnel to arrange negative COVID test reports for Rs 500 per person. As per the statement of the accused, the police said that he would collect Aadhar card and money from passengers and source the fake negative test reports from the testing centre in neighbouring Lahorijan, Karbi Anglong, bordering Dimapur. “This is being investigated and all individuals involved are being thoroughly examined,” the release added. When contacted for further details, the PRO did not rule out the involvement of other passenger transport agencies though he maintained that there was as yet no evidence implicating other agencies.
