THE FINAL draft policy for Women empowerment has already been completed and will be launched shortly, according to state Social Welfare department source.
The final draft policies will covers all sectors, which concerns women empowerment like setting up of State Women Commission, Women Development Commission, HIV/AIDS, Nutrition, SHG etc.
Although, setting up of women commission has created controversy recently, on the ground that the state government felt it not necessary, while the women groups felt that it should be created for development of women.
“I see a big role in SWC, said DK Bhalla, Commissioner and Secretary, Social Welfare, stating that the commission is not necessarily meant only for violence ridden states, but would play a big role even in the state like Nagaland.
At present there are about 600 self help groups (SHGs), but the beneficiaries are mostly from the upper strata (well to do and those having connection with the state satraps), said Bhalla. This leaves about 30,000 needy women from poor households in both rural and urban location.
Recently, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio had rued that in spite of the huge investment in the women department, it has not performed satisfactorily. The fund has not been fully utilized, said the chief minister.
