Dimapur, February 8 (MExN): With the political parties as well as citizens gearing up for the impending 14th Nagaland Assembly Election, the Pochury Baptist Theological Association (PBTA) has appealed to all the people to abide by the guidelines of the Clean Election Movement.
“All policies and forces which are against true democratic electioneering system must be stopped once and for all. Every individual must exercise one’s own democratic right responsibly and consciously for the common welfare,” it stated in a press release received here on Wednesday.
In the release, PBTA president Wuothovi observed that “Election in Nagaland has shown the dark side of us, whereby all sorts of corruption is practiced by different groups and individuals.”And while everybody has seen and felt the negative impact of wrong practice of election in the state has caused enormous problems such as corruption and lack of development in the society, the release stated that “majority of us refuse to change our attitude and actions.”
“We have come to the point where it is difficult to have clean and fair election. Nagas feel that corruption is like a giant that cannot be defeated,” the release stated.
Against this backdrop, the PBTA stated that the Clean Election Movement, under the aegis of Nagaland Baptist Church Council, has been creating awareness about the importance of clean and fair election in order to give hope for better society.
“Although many people are pessimistic about its success, we observe that it has impacted the society positively in a great way. We have heard and seen its message being taken to different corners, from churches to colleges and to every section of society though different agents of the movement. The message of the movement has reached the masses of Naga society, although many are yet to realize and change,’ it said.
Further, the PBTA asserted its support for the Movement and said that in the past, “we all have played blame game to achieve one’s own goals.”
However, the right principle of democracy should be restored in order to bring change in our society by all individuals and groups, it said while making a call to “end the wrong practices and take responsibility for our wrong actions and change ourselves for our better future.”
