
Phek | September 15 : With no gun shots heard for at least a period of three years, people of Phek region specially Phek Village and its neighbouring villages were taken aback following the firing of heavy sophisticated weapons this evening at around 4.50 PM here at NEC Phek junction 1 KM away from Phek village and 5 KM from Phek Town.
According to reliable sources, Police personnel fired at the FGN-Non Accordist cadres approximately 10 in numbers, when FGN cadres ignored the signal of the police personnel to halt at NEC Phek Junction. Mention may be made that FGN cadres were reportedly extorting money from the commuters at Lanye when the Police personnel rushed towards them.
As per the police sources, efforts were made the whole day to nab the cadres who were said to be extorting. At around 4.50 PM, unexpectedly the Police were able to stop the vehicle (TATA Mobile) at NEC Phek Junction. The cadres were travelling in that vehicle. Four cadres were arrested on the spot. At few weapons were also seized from the arrested cadres it was reported.
The people of Phek Village in particular and the neighbouring villages while expressing its discontentment over the unexpected incident taking place in a populated area, further condemned the extortion activities.
The Phek Students’ Union (PSU) official while talking to The Morung Express has also condemned the incident pointing out that such activities were detrimental for students’ pursuing their studies.
