FPAI holds awareness on male engagement in reproductive health

Phek, November 23 (MExN): Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), Nagaland Branch conducted an awareness session on “Male involvement in sexual and reproductive health” with the 5th NAP Battalion Phek, Phek town on November 21.


Speaking on the topic, resource person Dr Pusasul Martin, MO PHC Lozaphuhu emphasized on the three components in contributing to male involvement in sexual and reproductive health which includes promotion, prevention and to care for the spouse.


If these three components are made successful, the couple can live a happy and healthy life, Dr Martin said. “In a male dominant society like Nagaland, we tend to have unbalanced and unequal relationship in families/couples, and men are prone to develop risk behavioral patterns for example irresponsible alcoholism/extramarital affairs etc,” Dr Martin explained.


He stressed on the need to sensitize about gender equality at the earliest to adolescent boys. While highlighting on the responsibilities of a man, he shared that the cause of infertility was always attributed to the women without being aware that a man also have sexual and reproductive health issue.


He said that it was important to learn the concept of family planning and its various methods in order to prevent unintended pregnancy and other diseases associated through sexual contact.


Dr Martin explained contraceptive choices and informed the gathering on the availability of male permanent sterilization method which is known as No-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV).


Emphasizing on this, he explained about the physiology of male reproductive system and the simple medical procedure of NSV.


Earlier in the programme, Lanu Aier, NPS Deputy Commandant, 5th NAP Bn, Phek delivered the welcome address.  Ville Rhetso, counselor FPAI Nagaland Branch shared the objective and gave an overview of Family Planning Association of India.


Speaking on the objectives of man involvement in sexual and reproductive health, she urged the participants to understand women’s health and share equal responsibility in building a healthy family and quality life.


Akangkokla Namo, Program Officer FPAI also shared few major concerns of adolescence’s health and referred various ways to deal and assist them as an adult when they are victimized to various social evils.


Earlier, FPAI Nagaland Branch conducted a session on sexual and reproductive health with women group of 5th NAP BN, Phek. The session included topics on women’s health focusing on menstruation and hygiene, cervical and breast cancer, family planning and its method. In addition, the mothers were also sensitized on comprehensive sexuality education.
