DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 7 (MExN): The Kiusam Area Gus’ Union has raised concerns over a severe shortage of teachers at Government Middle School (GMS) Kiusam Town, urging the state’s education department to take immediate action.
In a letter addressed to the Principal Director of School Education, the union highlighted that the institution, formerly known as Government High School (GHS) Kiusam Town, has been struggling with a lack of teaching staff for several years. According to the statement, the school has had no Headmaster (HM) or Assistant Headmaster (AHM) since 2016, after the last AHM was posted that year. Additionally, teachers assigned to the school have often been sent for in-service B.Ed training without relievers, leading to a further decline in academic performance. The union attributed these factors to the school’s inability to produce successful results in past years, which ultimately led to its downgradation from a high school to a middle school.
Since 2019, the school has been functioning with only one science teacher, who continues to manage all academic responsibilities single-handedly, including new admissions for the 2025 academic session. The union expressed concern that the quality of education is at risk, creating anxiety among students and parents regarding future academic outcomes.
Despite repeated appeals from various organizations, including the apex students’ union, the community claimed that no concrete action has been taken to resolve the crisis. The union also noted that since the school’s downgradation, there has been no official communication regarding a potential merger with the Government Primary School (GPS), leaving the future of the institution uncertain.
The Kiusam Area Gus’ Union has urged the education department to intervene immediately and deploy adequate teachers at GMS Kiusam Town to ensure proper learning conditions for students.
