With the objective of providing complimentary dental check-ups and services to the rural population, a free dental healthcare camp was organised at Yikhum village in Wokha district on February 10.
Organised by Dr Mhao Jungio, BDS, MDS (Specialist), Proprietor of Gums & Smile Dental Clinic, Wokha, the camp was held under the theme “Better Teeth, Better Health,” highlighting the vital link between oral health and overall well-being.
Medicines for the camp were sponsored by Woben Medical Wholesale, whose proprietor stated that the support was extended in view of the difficulties faced by villagers in accessing medicines, particularly in interior and remote areas due to distance and limited supply.
The dental outreach programme primarily focused on elderly residents, persons with disabilities and individuals with restricted mobility, many of whom are unable to travel outside the village to avail dental care.
Lack of awareness on oral hygiene, which often leads to neglected dental conditions, was also addressed during the camp.
Services provided during the camp included free registration, free dental consultation, tooth restoration, extractions and oral health awareness sessions. Several cases of long-neglected oral conditions, including loosening of teeth and untreated decay, were attended to during the camp.
Further, patients were informed that they would be eligible for free registration and a 30 per cent discount on further dental treatment at the clinic.
The camp benefited villagers across a wide age range, from a four-year-old child to the oldest patient aged 87 years.
Meanwhile, Zanbemo Kithan, Pastor of Yikhum Village, expressed gratitude to the organiser and the medicine sponsor for the camp, noting that the initiative was particularly beneficial for residents unable to travel outside the village due to age, disability or financial constraints. Such camps play an important role in improving healthcare access and promoting preventive awareness in rural communities, he added.
Dr Jungio informed that this was their first free dental outreach camp in the village and that similar initiatives are planned in other villages in and around Wokha town. He further added that the programme is intended to be conducted every year, with repeat visits to villages to ensure continuity of care and sustained oral health awareness.
