Due to the unprecedented downpour in Dimapur over the past two days, several houses and business establishments have been affected at East Police colony, Dimapur causing untold hardship on the lives of the residents; especially tenants living in rented homes who have little or no option in terms of alternate accommodation.

On Tuesday, flood waters pouring in from the drains and nallahs had seeped inside houses in the vicinity led families to seek refuge on upper levels of their buildings and rooftops. According to one of the affected residents, most of the kitchen utensils had been submerged under the water, and her family had not eaten their meals all-day. “We have no other place to go nearby and my relatives live far-away so it we’re worried about what to do next,” she revealed.

A number of shops located nearby also had to close their shutters for the day as their building became inundated with water.

Another resident, a mother of two children, explained that her eldest son had to cancel going to school as their home was also affected by the flood. “We’re afraid that the water might cause sickness for our children as it is very dirty,” she said.

Several other children in the locality also had to skip school, according to their parents.

As per Vitoka Awomi, this was the first time that such flood-waters had caused immense damage to the houses in the colony. “Floods do occur from time to time in the past but it was manageable in the past,” he said.

Speaking with The Morung Express, Vitolu Chophy, Council Secretary of East Police colony, stated that almost half of the households had been affected by the floods. He further attributed the deluge to the blockage of drains at Ragailong colony, located further along Walford road. “We have given our report to the Disaster Management authority but we are yet to receive any response from them as of this evening,” he said.

Similar incidents of flooding were also reported in and around SM Colony, Vilhume Colony and other parts of Dimapur.
