Himalayan Cleanup: Nagaland joins campaign against plastic

A total of nine cleanup teams from across Nagaland participated at The Himalayan Cleanup today where volunteers not only cleaned up select sites but also segregated and conducted brand and waste audits of the garbage collected. 

In Dimapur, the cleanup was coordinated out by CAN Youth and NE Welfare Society at Padumpukhuri village. In Chümoukedima, the Mongchen Cricket Club cleaned the local ground while Chümoukedima Town Council participated by cleaning three sites including Chumu check point to LPG bottling plant, 2nd Gate to Chümoukedima Village Gate and 7th Mile Gate to Khova gate. Grace Family Ministry carried out the cleanup at Mon while Bloomberg Elite Society carried out the camp at Kiphire. Kohima Village Youth Organization also participated by cleaning sites at Kohima town and Sanuorü while the Clean Mokokchung Campaign cleaned up Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Mokokchung. 

Last year’s Himalayan Cleanup winners Chizami village in Phek and Mopungchuket village in Mokokchung also participated in the cleanup today. This was informed by Animesh Gautam of The Himalayan Cleanup team. Nagaland, Manipur and Meghalaya undertook the cleanup today while the rest of the nine mountain states will conduct The Himalayan Cleanup tomorrow.

212 kgs of waste collected at Mopungchuket

Along with nine other cleanup teams across Nagaland, Mopungchuket village also joined The Himalayan Cleanup today where 91 volunteers teamed up and cleaned three prominent sites in the village periphery. The sites cleaned today included the Süngkotenem Park, the Mangkolong oak tree avenue stretching 3 kms and Longrangtenem Park, all of which are frequented by tourists and visitors.

A total of 212 kgs of waste were collected from the three sites most of which comprised of PET bottles, multi-layered packaging wrappers and single-use plastic items. A number of wastes comprising of Tetra Pak packages, tins, textiles, glass and other plastic items were also collected. After collecting and segregating the wastes, brand and waste audits were undertaken at all the three cleanup sites simultaneously. PET bottles were stored at the ‘resource center’ while the tins were offered to the local metal vendor in the village. The remaining garbage were disposed at MMC dump site located 25 kms away from the village.

The most number of garbage in terms of weight was collected from the oak tree avenue weighing 114 kgs followed by Süngkotenem Park and Longrangtenem Park where the garbage collected weighed 72 and 26 kgs respectively.

Earlier in the morning, a brief thanksgiving programme was held at Pongen Salang for Mopungchuket winning the second place in the Himalayan Cleanup 2018 competition. The volunteers present also pledged to be ambassadors of plastic-free Mopungchuket. Volunteers from the village council, Watsü women organization, eighteen women’s SHGs and MALT participated in the cleanup today. The Himalayan Cleanup 2019 at Mopungchuket was initiated by The Greensight Project in association with the Youth Ministry of Mopungchuket Baptist Church.
