THE IMPACT OF GODLY MUSIC

Dr. Khwan Leo Gangmei

The world we live today is not better than the days of Noah, the days of Prophet Jonah, and the wicked and the perverse generations and man emerged into crooked ways. The daily newspaper headlines killing, raping, extortion, abortion, frothing etc. And seem the world enjoy reading and entertain such news items without having considered how wicked the present world is. But, handful genuine Christians are seeking remedy of pain and agony people are facing, at this very juncture, how can one brings changes and challenges to our society? We can once draw our attention back to the ancient time when the wicked people’s hearts are change through simply music that is played by godly man who filled with the Spirit of God. Kinds of music has been imparted by well known musicians down through the centuries, but the question that continue to provoke our hearts today is, can the world music bring the inner heart change or penetrate the wicked heart? Of course the impact may be seen in their own realm but not that of the spiritual realm. Therefore, the impact of godly music is seen when godly man sings godly song, it touches the heart of the people, when godly man plays godly music, it moves the hearts of the people, when godly man plays godly music for God’s glory, it melts the heart of the people, when godly people play godly music, it brings changes to the heart of the people and it leads them to repent from their wicked ways of life.  In the Bible we see from the life of God fearing man, who lived an obedience life, obeyed God’s commandments, though he was a shepherd boy tending his father’s flock in the wilderness, he loves God’s commandment, therefore, he was taken to the palace king Saul to play his music for the king. When he plays his music, the wicked heart of king Saul was moved, the wicked heart of king Saul was changed, wicked heart of king Saul was stirred it up, the wicked heart of king Saul was penetrated and repented, finally the evil spirit which was in heart of Saul fled. The great power behind his music was the power of God, because he lived right with God, David sings song for God’s glory not for his fame, played harp for God’s glory not for his name. Therefore, greatly moved and the spirit flee from Saul. So, what kind of songs should we prepare to sing for? And what kind of music should we prepare to play for?

Once, Jim Reeves, was asked to sing for Queen Elizabeth, (the world was longing what a utmost privileged would be for us to see the world famous Gospel singer turn up and sing his song for Queen of England and the world long awaited) but he declined the invitation made by the Queen and said, though Queen would give me half of the kingdom or would beheaded me I will not sing for man’s glory but for God alone. So, the decision is yours, whether to live for God and sing and play godly music or live for the name and fame of your own life. The best thing you can give to the Lord is to render your time to God to bring changes to this society, youth of today is the agent of change and you are in need of an hour. So, how is your life today? Let your music or everything you do, do it for God’s glory. (1 Cor. 10:31). The writer is Academic Dean of International Theological College & Seminary, Dimapur.
