Is mobile really helping the students?

Semto L Sumi

Here I want to present some of the most obvious points about the use of mobile and its consequences.

As mobile continue to mature, more students look to it not only of sending and receiving information but also as a means of entertainment. The question arises whether the mobile, in itself, justifies significant alteration to the students and all its users. Of course, it is indeed availing the students/its users to keep in touch with family members, relatives, friends and information’s and other aspects. On the contrary, it is certainly hampering the studies of the students regardless of money spent. Evidently, when one get mobile in their possession, the will in no time get lot of contact number and friends. As a matter of fact, there are varieties of entertainments in mobile which compels the user to spend countless time in mobile with full concentration, just as the bus driver spent countless hours behind the wheels. As the fashion goes, almost all students of higher secondary level and above are using mobile and it is not surprising that new users are increasing day by day. In fact, we human beings need to have contact numbers to stay in touch with one another. But as far as my knowledge is concerned, it is not at all necessary for the students to carry mobile inside academic institutions, colleges and training organizations as it is a place for learning. The mobile phones become a hindrance in the path of learning as the mind gets diverted when it rings. It takes off the concentration. Mobile phone is certainly useful for sending instant information and reaches the person directly, but it should not be misused.

One of the most obvious points that really hamper the studies of its users is SMS. In fact SMS is benefiting many users specially who are not financially sound and cannot help finance their bill, as one can convey and receive information through SMS by spending less amount. Moreover, one can send information in times of network failure, or when one is engaged in conversation with others and when the phone is off. But on the contrary, these consequences are undesirable from the point of view of the welfare of the students and its users, as there are many who use it for pleasure. Being SMS free for the BSNL customers and for it consumes less amount, the users spend more time in sending messages, just as the kids playing their toys/video games. Thus completely keeping aside their studies, as some users keep chatting/sending messages to friends and anonymous till midnight. As far as my knowledge is concerned, an SMS is a clandestine route that brings relationships closer, and it is therefore considered a silent mediator between the two. Quite possibly lots of messages are being exchanged. But the misuse of mobile phone is quite clear with numerous messages and miss calls send by anonymous persons.

While not claiming the academic institutions should totally ban the use of mobile nor regulating the students to refrain from using mobile, but my observation is, the rational Naga students (mobile users) should think and decide whether it is really helping or hampering them. The points specified above are not in the intention to hurt the sentiments of the users but to lat everyone know about its use and consequences.
