Jakhama, November 7 (MExN): An awareness programme on “Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection: The Journey Towards Viksit Bharat 2047” was held at St Joseph's College, Jakhama on November 7.

The event, organised by the college's Department of Commerce in collaboration with the state's Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection, aimed to educate students on consumer rights and the significance of informed consumerism for a progressive India, stated a DIPR report.

Bendanglila (NCS), Joint Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection, attended as the Special Guest. In her address, she underscored the essential role of legal metrology in ensuring fairness in daily transactions, from market purchases to fuel dispensing.

She explained that the enforcement system works to maintain accuracy in weights and measures, protecting both consumers and traders from malpractice. Highlighting common measurement frauds, she stated that inaccuracies in packaged goods or fuel are not just unfair but illegal.

She urged students to be vigilant by checking weights, MRP, and expiry dates, and to report violations. Encouraging them to spread awareness, she said, “small acts of awareness lead to big waves of change.”

Labelling students as future torchbearers of honesty, she called on them to uphold the principle that “every measure counts, and every citizen matters.”

In his keynote address, Limatoshi Jamir, Joint Controller of the Department of LMCP, outlined the government's 'Viksit Bharat 2047' vision to transform India into a developed nation by 2047. He called upon consumers to collaborate for this goal and spread awareness on exercising consumer rights.
