The Judicial Inquiry Committee (JIC) instituted to probe the Tuensang fiasco by the Nagaland state government has submitted its report. Sources told The Morung Express that the JIC submitted the report to the Chief Secretary on June 16.
There was however no information from the government officially confirming the development with calls and messages to the CS going unanswered.
A three-member JIC headed by retired District & Session Judge LN Sema was instituted on May 29 “to inquire into the matter regarding transportation of the stranded returnees to Tuensang from Kohima on the 26th of May 2020.” The Committee was given 15 days to inquire and submit its report.
It was instituted following a public outcry after Chennai returnees in transit quarantine in Kohima were transported to Tuensang without waiting for the mandatory test COVID-19 results. One of the returnees, who were transported, was later found to be positive on May 27.
The government went into damage control mode with the state Health Minister dashing to Tuensang the next day and subsequently the formation of the JIC was announced.
The Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation initially expressed dissatisfaction at the government’s response but relented while cautioning of further course of action if the report of the JIC was found to be unsatisfactory.
An ENPO leader further reiterated it today. While stating that it was yet to be officially informed of the JIC’s report/findings, he informed that ENPO officials were scheduled to meet the Chief Minister on June 17.
