Incessant mudslide at Lerie Chazou colony along the National Highway stretch continues to be a routine trouble for human and vehicular impasse also a cause of disruption to residents in the colony. The steep slope adjacent a small stream after the sharp turn from CRPF camp this year has experienced rapid surging mud flow often with mud and debris tracked onto the highway, drainage and its surfaces.

It is much activated even with brief periods of rainfall or during and after heavy rains. This has also kept the road and drainage in bad shape, requiring constant clearance of debris.

Lerie Chazou Youth, President, Diethozo Tase stated that the mudslide became frequent this year also after the retaining walls were constructed. Students crossing the stretch have mostly been effected, the president informed.
The mudslide has downed several trees, destroyed two houses and a garage.

An engineer at the SDO PWD (National Highway) Kohima Akumdong Walling was of the opinion that it could be due to vulnerable soil. He however noted that since the stretch is also maintained by contractors under liability period, he said road clearance and other maintenance is undertaken by the contractor incharge.

The Er later assured that the department will look towards undertaking protection works, adding that “As of now we are waiting for the dry season.”

An official at the Nagaland State Disaster Management Agency shared that the concern of the Agency is confined to providing relief and undertake survey or help collect data for concerned department.
