In what can be termed as the ingenuity initiative of the state police force, the Kohima Police has developed Ultra Violet (UV) germicidal box for the purpose of sanitizing daily use items such as caps, masks, wallet, belts, documents etc.
While the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown has brought untold hardship affecting the lives of the people at all levels, it has also been an opportunity in awakening the creativity of the people to find and discover innovative ways and means to adapt to the situation.
UV germicidal or decontamination box is a high efficiency chamber to safely decontaminate non-critical items while providing a safe work environment for the operator.
Attributing the developing of UV decontamination box to the ingenuity of some of his officer, Superintendent of Police, Kevithuto Sophie, speaking to The Morung Express said, it is the initiative of the Kohima Police.
The idea to develop the box was initiated inorder to ensure maximum safety of the police officers and personnel, who are working in the frontline in view of the Covid-19 pandemic, informed Sophie.
The box has been developed using locally available materials such as brand new steel trunk box, aluminum foil, UV lamp, chalk, adapter and plug for the purpose of sanitizing daily use items such as caps, masks, wallet, belts, documents etc.
Briefly explaining the process on how the UV Box functions, Sophie said, daily used items may be placed inside the box and kept closed for sometime, which then kill the germs and virus. However, he cautioned it can be fatal if exposed to the eyes and skin.
It was also informed that the Kohima Police is in the process of producing more UV boxes, which will be kept in the office, police stations and check gates in Kohima district. When enquired if it is contemplating for mass production, he said, it is not for mass production but for the use of the police personnel.
Despite being at the forefront responding to the call of duty in maintaining law and order during the Covid-19 pandemic, there are instances where the Kohima police went beyond their duty call. They have delivered relief rations to the stranded labourers and students door-to-door, and also aided the homeless and strayed migrants to acquire relief rations.
