Kohima’s solar city master plan approved

Dimapur, December 15 (MExN): The department of New & Renewable Energy, Nagaland, says the master plan for Kohima as a ‘solar city’ has been approved while Dimapur has been ‘approved’ in-principle for the ‘solar city scheme’ of the Government of India. The department issued a press release today responding to a news item in this daily published on December 13.
According to the director of New & Renewable Energy TS Angami the ‘solar city program’ is being taken up jointly by the department with principle stakeholders such as the municipalities in concern, commerce organizations and the department of Urban Development. “Accordingly, series of stakeholders meetings are held before finalizing the master plan. The master plan for developing Kohima into a solar city was recently approved in principle by the Ministry but not a single project proposal has been sanctioned yet, as claimed,” the department said.
Similarly, Angami said, Dimapur city has also been selected, in principle, for its development into a solar city for which preliminary baseline data are being collected. “However, except for petty expenditures towards preparation of MP, setting up of solar city cell, publicity and information, no other sanction has been made so far to the state.”
Both the missions are still at infancy and lots of works are yet to be done before it sees the light of the day, the department said. “Allow the mission to build up its own basic infrastructure before it can take-off. All the proposed works will be public oriented and thus absolute transparency will have to be exercised. Constructive criticisms are most welcome but insinuating intents are not at all conducive to any successful mission, especially when it is still at its nascent stage,” the department asserted.
Another matter the press release mentioned was that the Solar Photovoltaic Devices work predominantly on radiation of sunlight, in the form of photons, rather than the heat associated with it. “In fact, the life and efficiency of SPV modules are higher in cool environment rather than hot and humid places. Nevertheless, Dimapur is our next stop. It may come sooner than you expect,” the department.
