KVK Tuensang celebrates World Soil Day

Tuensang, December 8 (MExN): Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Tuensang celebrated ‘World Soil Day’ under the theme “Stop Soil Erosion Save Our Future” at Changsao Thangjam Setshang Hall, Tuensang on December 5.
The programme was chaired by Martina Shitiri, ACTO (Genetics and Plant Breeding). While delivering the keynote address, Dr Keviletsu Khate, Senior Scientist & Head emphasized on the importance of sustaining healthy ecosystem and well being of humans by addressing the ever increasing challenges in soil erosion and its management.
He encouraged the farmers to engage proactively in improving soil health which is the most important component for economic sustenance. Dr Khate also suggested going for Alder tree plantation along with Jhum cultivation to revive soil nutrient depletion in the district.
Thematic presentation of the celebration was delivered by Tokiho Achumi, Assistnat Chief Technical Officer. He emphasized on soil erosion as a priority threat in respect to agriculture in Tuensang, where the farming system coupled with its topographical nature accelerates its progression.
He stated that our subsistence Jhum farming which is a necessity rather than a choice has “compelled our action for the outcome.”
Achumi highlighted problems with a remedy to reduce soil erosion. He further said that farmers of Tuensang can improve and can contribute actions towards solving problems through community intervention for the betterment of the farming community and the coming generation.
In commemoration of the day, 230 numbers of Soil Health Cards were issued based on soil analysis for respective farmers by Dr Khate. Vote of thanks was pronounced by Seveto Nyekha, Programme Assistant. Representative farmers numbering around 30 from 8 selected villages under the district participated in the programme.
