Maligaon, November 8 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) registered a 12.27 per cent increase in freight unloading during October 2026, handling 1,162 rakes across its jurisdiction against 1,035 rakes in the corresponding month last year.
The improved performance supported the supply of essential commodities and industrial goods to the region, NFR said in a statement.
During October, NFR handled a wide range of commodities, including foodgrains, edible oil, fertilisers, sugar, salt, petroleum products, coal and cement at goods sheds and freight terminals across its jurisdiction. These supplies cater to household consumption, agricultural requirements and industrial activities across the region.
Among the northeastern states, Assam accounted for the highest unloading, with 647 rakes during the month. Tripura recorded the unloading of 81 rakes, followed by Manipur with 29, Nagaland with 17, Mizoram with 11, Arunachal Pradesh with 10 and Meghalaya with one rake.
The freight movement supported the availability of essential and other commodities across these states.
In addition, 205 rakes were unloaded in West Bengal and 161 in Bihar within NFR's jurisdiction. The movement of these commodities supports regional supply chains, trade and economic activities in the two states.
The continued transportation and unloading of essential and industrial commodities underline NFR's role in meeting the region's daily requirements.
NFR said it remained focused on improving freight-handling efficiency and ensuring the timely movement of goods to serve consumers, traders and industries.
