Kohima | November 4 : Asserting that what the young people need most today is self-discipline, Chief Secretary Lalthara today challenged the youth to re-learn obedience.
Gracing the 45th annual prize distribution- cum- parting social of Kohima College here today, Lalthara said that lack of discipline and spirit of rebellion spoils most of the youths’ life.
Lalthara asserted that one cannot go astray when obedience is developed and asked the students to develop obedience to their own conscience to yield the fruit of success.
The Chief Secretary was appreciative that Kohima College was growing from strength to strength and lauded the principal and faculty for its good performance sheet.
Lalthara said it was apprehensive about taking over Kohima College by the government earlier that the quality of teaching and performance may come down. But such apprehension has been overthrown. He expressed happiness that instead of deteriorating, the performance of the college is improving and moving from strength to strength. Stating that some colleges do not admit certain category of students, he was happy that Kohima College has been accepting all kind of students and moulding them, which is a big achievement in itself. “Many colleges are very selective but you are not selective,” he said and termed it a good sign.
In the meantime, he also challenged the students to continue to enhance the prestige of this college. Latter, Lalthara gave away prize to students in various disciplines.
Earlier, Kohima College principal C. Khalong Ao in his keynote address said that Kohima College is one of the largest college not only in Nagaland but in the entire north east with an enrolment of 1847 students, 37 teachers and 31 ministerial staff.
In regard to performance of the college in 2011 examinations, it produced pass percentage of 71% in BA and 66% in higher secondary. He declared that Kohima College is going to get NAAC assessment very soon for which intent study has already been submitted. Once the college is accessed by UGC, he said, Kohima College will find in the list of prominent colleges which would then attract students not only from the state but outside the state as well. He also stated that Kohima College had produced many toppers including 2 toppers in Tenyidie department and one in history department. Stating that tomorrow belong to students, the principal asked them to study hard and excel. “You have potential. If other can do it why cannot you,” he said.
Referring to continuous process of learning, he said degree is not enough and asked the students to turn information into knowledge and knowledge to wisdom. Stating that opportunity will not be lost, he told the students that once a person missed the opportunity it will be grabbed by others as post will never go away. He also highlighted four steps to achievement viz- plan purposefully, prepare prayerfully, proceed positively and pursue persistently.
Rajesh, pastor, Bread of Life Church prayed for outgoing students. Ruvuotuonuo Ruth and Jesse Shijoh spoke on behalf of outgoing students and remaining students respectively.
