In an effort to showcase, promote, and preserve the cultural heritage of the Ao community and the essence of Ao Naga festivals, Longtrok Senden, a stalwart club from Ungma, held its 39th edition of the club’s cultural programme on Wednesday evening, July 31.
The programme was organised in collaboration with the North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC), Dimapur, at the Yimtsüngta Arok Sapang, Ungma. The event drew significant attention, as under-14 year old participants from ten clubs captivated the audience with their dance steps, filling the atmosphere with cheer and laughter.

Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, Thsuvisie Phoji, attended the programme as the special guest. He lauded Longtrok Senden for their leadership role in upholding the rich cultural heritage and their pivotal role in propagating these traditions to future generations. While extending Tsüngremmung greetings, Phoji noted that Ungma, “the grand old village” from which many Ao villages have emerged, is at the forefront of preserving culture, heritage, identity, language, and customs. He appealed to the community to rededicate their efforts to promote Naga culture across the Indian subcontinent.
Phoji also argued that the dilution of culture, language, and customs with other sophisticated cultures would lead to the extinction of a community’s identity. He reminded the people that promoting and preserving one’s rich heritage helps protect one’s identity.
Additionally, he pointed out the potential scope of cultural tourism, suggesting that inviting other communities would foster closer relationships and bonding, while attracting tourists to witness the grand showcase of cultural heritage.
Oliver Temsu Pongen, Programme Officer at NEZCC, spoke on behalf of Dr Prashana Gogoi, Director of NEZCC. He stated that the programme was enlightening and impactful for both participants and the audience and suggested that Longtrok Senden develop a versatile cultural troupe to represent at the international level. He urged the people of Ungma to focus on drama, handicrafts, handlooms, and cultural troupes.
In the competition, the United Soyim Club emerged as the winner, while Salukum Rogo Ungma bagged the runner-up position. The Longtrok Senden Excellence Award was also given to six recipients in the fields of education and culture during the event.
