Lotha Yi Tsüngon observed to promote indigenous language

The Kohima Lotha Hoho (KLH) observed Lotha Yi Tsüngon (Lotha Language Day) on May 1 at the KLH conference hall, Kohima.

KOHIMA, MAY 4 (MExN): The Kohima Lotha Hoho (KLH), along with the rest of the Lotha community, observed Lotha Yi Tsüngon (Lotha Language Day) on May 1 at the KLH conference hall with Y. Mhonbemo Humtsoe, MLA, as the special guest.

The event was organised to foster awareness, promote and protect the indigenous Lotha language, and ensure its transmission to younger generations. Speaking on the occasion, Humtsoe stressed that language is an essential marker of heritage, culture, and identity. He expressed concern over the alarming rate at which indigenous languages are disappearing and emphasised the urgency of language preservation efforts.

Earlier, R. Ekonthing Lotha, Secretary of the Lotha Literature Committee, highlighted the significance of observing the day and underscored the need to actively use and promote the mother tongue in everyday life.

A traditional folksong was presented by Wontsuthung Humtsoe and group, showcasing the richness of Lotha oral tradition.

The welcome address was delivered by KLH Chairman K. N. Mhonthung Lotha, while the programme was chaired by J. Mhathung Humtsoe, Cultural Secretary of KLH. The event began with an invocation by S. Mhonchumo Lotha, Pastor of Kohima Lotha Baptist Church, seeking blessings for the preservation of language and cultural identity.
