MALT celebrates 84th edition of Sungkotenem festival

The Mopungchuket Ait Liashir Telungjem (MALT) celebrates its 84th edition of Sungkotenem festival cum general meeting at Mopungchuket village, Mokokchung from December 27 to 29.  

Dr. Imtiwapang Aier, Parliamentary Secretary, Geology and Mining, was the chief guest at the Culture Carnival which was held on December 29 at Imkong Moapu, Mopungchuket Village under Mokokchung. The cultural carnival began with ‘Yimdongmak’ (village procession) where the students from different units participated.  

Dr. Imtiwapang in his speech said that Asetkong range is the cradle of Christianity and education and that Asetkong has produced many prominent figures and pioneers. He stressed on the importance of preserving our culture and tradition and encouraged the younger generation to learn and impart the cultures they learn during such festivals. Dr. Imtiwapang further said that we should maintain our identity especially by preserving our language along with other culture and tradition. He added that the cultural carnival is an important event as it helps in maintaining our identity which will be an asset for the future.  

The special invitees at the festival included Longmisa, Chuchuyimpang and Mongsenyimti Student’s Union. The three day festival will feature competitions among different units in traditional dance and games, choral and drama competition. One of the most anticipated event, the Sungkotenem Open Beat Contest ‘Clash of Bands 2016’ will also be a part of the festival which will be held at Sungkotenem Park, Mopungchuket on 29 December.  

The MALT Sungkotenem festival cum general meeting is a quadrennial celebration and is attended by Mopungchuket students from all units including Mokokchung, Dimapur, Kohima, Shillong, Impur and Mopungchuket village.
