A scuffle broke out between Congress party workers and police personnel on Friday when the former attempted to burn an effigy of Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar in front of Congress Bhavan in Imphal.

Even as the police took away the effigy, the Congress workers brought out another effigy and burnt it the Congress Bhavan premises, in protest against the recent "derogatory remarks" of the Haryana chief minister against Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Few days ago, the chief minister of election-bound Haryana had hurled a jibe at Congress chief Sonia Gandhi using the Hindi proverb “Khoda Pahad Nikli Chuhiya”, mocking her return as AICC president.

Strongly condemning the derogatory remark against their chief and demanding an apology from the Haryana chief minister, leaders and workers of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) staged a protest in front of Congress Bhavan in Imphal’s BT Road.

During the protest in which MPCC president Gaikhangam and former chief minister and opposition leader O Ibobi Singh and Congress MLAs participated among others, various placards read with words of protesting against the remark of the Haryana chief minister were displayed.

At the concluding part of the protest, Congress workers brought out an effigy of Haryana chief minister to burn it on the road along the BT Road.

However, police on duty there immediately rushed and struggled to take away the effigy from the Congress workers. When the Congress workers ran away, the police chased after and snatched it, which irritated the Congress workers.
In a bid to put the situation under control, the police closed down the gate of the Congress Bhavan.

However, Congress workers immediately made another effigy of Haryana chief minister and burnt it in the Congress Bhavan premises.

Earlier too, Congress leaders and workers staging the protest engaged in a heated exchange of words with the police after the later attempted to prevent staging the protest there.

Talking to reporters, MPCC president Gaikhangam alleged that the statement made by the Haryana chief minister was not only indecent, but also shows the anti-women attitude of the BJP.
