To strengthen democracy, the media in Nagaland must not be afraid of the truth, but needs to step out and confront the truth to improve the systems, said Abu Metha, Advisor to Chief Minister of Nagaland.

“The media have to be willing and courageous to highlight the deficits, misappropriation, shortfalls in government,” Metha said while addressing the State level National Press Day under the theme “Who is not afraid of Media ?” organised by the Directorate of Information & Public Relation (DIPR) here.

He said that media is known as the fourth pillar of democracy which brings out the truth even in adverse circumstances. This day symbolizes freedom of the press and its responsibilities towards society, Metha said. Stating that Naga society faces so many challenges, he said the state government under the leadership of the Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio made an announcement that it will stand for meritocracy.

With this, he said meritocracy will be the benchmark of the delivery mechanism. In this, he urged the media to highlight the various challenges faced by the people and also speak about the lack of meritocracy in implementing government policies and programmes.

To fulfill the role of fourth pillar of democracy, the media's needs to carry out responsibility by walking an extra mile to ensure that the fourth pillar is contributing towards the wholesome role of democracy, he said. He also urged the media fraternity to be more focused on investigative journalism.

For this, the journalist needs the full support of media houses and societies as a whole. Investigative is about asking questions for the evil and discomfort and that's where the role of fourth pillar comes from, he added. Stating that democracy cannot grow if the fourth pillar is not strong enough, he said “The other pillar must be afraid of the media. They must know that the media is a watchdog and is watching over the other three pillars.”

He urged the fourth pillar to ensure that it highlights the voice of the people. “Let us contribute towards a stronger and fairer democracy in Nagaland. Without the freedom of the press, without the vibrant media, democracy does not exist. Let us recommit ourself, re-dedicate ourself towards the cause of democracy” he said.

Earlier, Z. Tokishe Sema, director DIPR exhorted the gathering. Simon Telia, deputy director, DIPR chaired function.
