Kohima, January 18 (MExN): Model Christian College (MCC), Kohima, in collaboration with the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP), Naga Hospital Authority, Kohima, organised a faculty and staff training on Psychological First Aid, identification of warning signs, response to self-harm, and referral mechanisms on January 17.
The training aimed to equip faculty and staff with essential knowledge and skills to identify mental health concerns and provide appropriate support and referrals within the college community.
The key objectives of the programme were to enhance awareness of mental health issues among faculty and staff, introduce the concept and application of Psychological First Aid, help participants identify early warning signs of mental distress and self-harm, and familiarise them with appropriate response strategies and referral mechanisms.
The programme was moderated by Asenla Jamir, Nodal Officer.
The first session, titled “Psychological First Aid”, was conducted by Kethozeno Mere, Psychiatric Nurse, DMHP, from 9.30 am to 10.30 am. The session focused on the importance of early identification of mental health concerns and the provision of immediate emotional support.
Following a short break, the second session on “Navigating Mental Health and Common Mental Disorders and Pathways to Care” was led by Veronica Nriame, Psychiatric Social Worker, DMHP, from 10.45 am to 11.45 am. The session highlighted common mental health disorders and emphasised appropriate referral mechanisms.
The programme concluded with a summarisation and interaction session from 11.45 am to 12.30 pm. The organisers said the training was informative and beneficial, enhancing the capacity of faculty and staff to respond effectively to mental health concerns within the college community.
