When discussing mental health, we refer to the emotional, psychological, and social well-being of an individual, influencing their thoughts, feelings, and actions. It determines how we manage stress and reflects our overall lifestyle.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health is defined as a “state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” Recently, there has been significant growth in research on positive mental health, driven by advocates of Positive Medicine and Psychology. They argue for a shift away from traditional medical and psychopathological models towards strengths-based approaches that emphasize positive attributes and assets (Kobau et al., 2011).

Despite these advancements, mental health still faces social stigma and taboos in many communities. The term “mental” itself carries stigma and is often neglected or misunderstood. Ignorance isn’t merely a lack of awareness; it also manifests when individuals stop learning upon achieving a certain status or age, hindering discussions about mental well-being within families and societies. However, mental wellbeing is as crucial as physical health, essential for leading a happy and peaceful life. Although mental health programs are gaining traction among professionals, educators, and religious leaders, many people still avoid seeking help due to social Stigma and Taboo.

The W.H.O rightly emphasizes that “There is no health without Mental health,” underscoring its importance across all stages of life—from childhood through adolescence to adulthood. It plays a pivotal role in every phase of life, necessitating proactive measures to safeguard and enhance psychological wellness which one can be better oneself using appropriate measures.

If you find yourself grappling with unexplained physical complaints such as body aches, headaches, lack of motivation, or persistent anxiety, these could be signs of unresolved childhood or psychological trauma. Trauma can stem from various sources such as childhood abuse, neglect, accidents, or the loss of loved ones. Seeking professional guidance is crucial to effectively work through these past experiences and restore mental well-being.
