The 7th graduation day of the Modern Institute of Teacher Education (MITE), Kohima was held at the MITE auditorium on November 5. A total of 94 B. Ed students graduated from the Institute. Out of the 20 toppers under Nagaland University, 12 toppers were from the Modern Institute of Teachers Education.

In his opening speech, Managing Director Pele Hekha stated that the graduating batch has set a very high benchmark for all the present and future batches of MITE. Among the 97 appeared, 94 students passed with 12 toppers out of 20 toppers under Nagaland University. “93 secured first division and only 1 secured the second division. So far, in the history of MITE, we haven't produced any 3rd division. All our graduates have fared well. I want to encourage the present batches to emulate and keep the flag of MITE high,” said Hekha.

The Managing Director also acknowledged the faculty members whose efforts ensured that all the students perform well in academics as well as extra-curricular activities.

Speaking on one's mission in life, special guest Dr. Apeni Lotha, Additional Director, Directorate of Higher Education stated that the profession of a teacher is a special calling which requires the responsibility to nurture each student with care. “Students, who are nurtured well, do better. Teaching is a very special calling, a high calling. We have to continue to be role models,” said Lotha. Lotha who herself was a Lecturer shared her own struggles as a teacher in the initial years, decades ago in the absence of infrastructures and communication. She encouraged the graduates to take their placements of teaching as a privilege and opportunity. No place is so remote when all the facilities are available in the present day, asserted Lotha.

Advising the graduates to be role models, Lotha noted that the roles of teachers are essential in shaping one's society. "Each stage of schooling is important. We are all for the same purpose: To prepare young minds for the society. With the same vision, pursue your profession," said Lotha.

Lotha also discussed on the dangers of co-curricular activities which sometimes may lead to Institutions missing out on  the core mission of educating students. With the many requirements and government guidelines, Lotha mentioned that educational institutions are giving

'so much importance to co-curricular activities, that we forget the classroom, and the core subject. "We are not able to do justice to our students," said Lotha who encouraged the Institution to stay rooted in its core aim of quality education. Out of the 50 private colleges in Nagaland, only 9 colleges offers B. Ed courses, informed Lotha while also highlighting the various scholarships available in the State. Lotha also informed that the draft National Education Policy has directed the four years course to be implemented by next year.

During the felicitation of the Graduates, the Valedictorian speech was delivered by Lhousilenuo Hama, First Topper of Nagaland University.
