The Mizoram government is making efforts to install a virology lab for testing coronavirus infected patients, official sources said on Sunday.

The sources said that efforts are on to upgrade TB Research Centre at State Referral Hospital  or Zoram Medical College by clubbing with laboratory from Mizoram University.

“Testing of coronavirus is expected to begin this week at ZMC,” a Health department official said

He also said that four medical experts have been sent to Silchar Medical College (SMC) for training and once they returned samples test is expected to begin at ZMC.

The official also said the government is making massive efforts to upgrade biosafety level 3 at ZMC to install virology lab.

He also said that the state government had submitted a detailed project report to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

The ZMC has, meanwhile, launched ambulance service for patients to take sample at the medical college after reports of drivers refusing to transport suspected patients.

For any patient aspiring to take sample, ambulance service is made available  to avoid any delay.

The ZMC also asked people not to panic and ostracise  health workers, who are working on COVID-19 related issues or those  taking blood samples of suspected patient.

Mizoram has reported the first case of novel coronavirus on March 25 after a 50-year-old pastor, who has a travel history to Amsterdam, tested positive.

Since then the government has been making massive efforts to fight the spread of the deadly virus.
