Mizoram seeks centre’s help to upgrade health centres

The Mizoram government has sought the Centre’s help to upgrade state medical college- Zoram Medical College (ZMC), official sources said on August 30.

 

The sources said that Mizoram chief minister, Zoramthanga, who is currently in the national capital, on Thursday called on Union Health Minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey and asked his help to upgrade the state’s medical college to at least some sort of "speciality" hospital.

 

Zoramthanga apprised the Union minister of various requirements for the upgrade of the medical college and said that the state government has been making massive efforts in this regard. He added that the state government is giving priority to public health.

 

During his brief meeting with the minister, the Mizoram chief minister underlined the need for setting up full fledged hospitals in the newly created three districts - Saitual, Khawzawl and Hnahthial.

 

The official sources said that Zoramthanga informed Choubey about the need for upgrading hospitals, community health centres and primary health centres in different parts of Mizoram. He also asked for help from the Union minister to upgrade Mamit district hospital to 200 bedded hospital as Mamit is an "inspirational" district, the sources said.

 

Choubey on his part told the chief minister that he would look into the demands and that he will soon visit Mizoram. The Union minister also promised to provide 8 medical vans to Mamit hospital, the sources said.

 

Zoramthanga also called Union Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas at the latter’s residence in Delhi. Zoramthanga appealed the minister to cover Mizoram under Prime Minister's Jan Vikas Yojana, a Central scheme which aims to provide skill development to minorities and weaker section of the society, an official statement said.

 

Abbas assured the Mizoram chief minister to make effort to ensure that Mizoram is covered along with two Northeastern states-Nagaland and Meghalaya.

 

Both the leaders also discussed about setting up of coaching centres in New Delhi for students from Mizoram.
