MTBC mourns deaths of church leaders

Melbourne/Imphal, May 16 (MExN): Melbourne Thadou Baptist Church (MTBC) has expressed grief over the killing of three Thadou church leaders in Manipur and called for justice, peace, and security in the violence-hit state.

In a statement, MTBC said it was deeply saddened by the killing of Rev Dr Vumthang Sitlhou, President of the Thadou Baptist Association India; Rev Kaigoulun Lhouvum, Finance Secretary of TBAI; and Pastor Paogoulun Sitlhou, who were killed in an alleged gun ambush on May 13 while travelling from Churachandpur to Kangpokpi district after attending a United Baptist Convention meeting in Churachandpur.

As a mark of respect, the church organised a special condolence service on May 15. The service included a condolence sermon by Pastor Ebenizer, while church leaders Khupmang and Jalun also addressed the congregation. A one-minute silence was observed in memory of the deceased.

The congregation also offered prayers for the bereaved families as well as the five survivors of the attack—Rev S M Haopu, Executive Secretary of TBAI, Rev Hekai Simte, Rev Kaikhothang Singsit, and two drivers, Thangtinlen Sitlhou and Goumang Lhouvum—who are reportedly undergoing treatment at Shija Hospitals and Research Institute.

MTBC stated that it shares longstanding ties with TBAI, particularly with Rev Dr Vumthang, who had visited the Thadou community in Melbourne during Christmas 2023. The church also recalled its support for initiatives led by TBAI, including the Thadou Bible translation project, theological education, and humanitarian assistance to internally displaced persons affected by the Manipur violence.

In its statement, MTBC described Rev Dr Vumthang as a respected spiritual leader who worked for unity within the Thadou community, peace-building, and inter-community coexistence.

Condemning the killings, the church appealed for justice and reiterated its commitment to praying for peace and reconciliation in Manipur.
