No drinking water in a Naga village
Chenio N Odyuo: This village in Nagaland has zero drinking water, will the government do something?
Northeast of India is blessed with plenty of rainfall and an abundance of greenery. Over the years though, there have been signs that all is not well in certain parts of the region.
Kangtsung village, which is in Tuli subdivision of Mokokchung district in Nagaland has a population of around 1500 people and yet they have to walk two kilometres every day to a spring to get them drinking water.
Oram, the Tribal Affairs Minister in the Centre had visited this village this year.
Despite the distance what really is a cause of concern is the pathway to the spring is slippery, rugged and infested with leeches and fetching water during odd hours for women and children is at risk.
It a tough life for the people and they have asked the State government to help them out.
“It’s been years and we need help from the government,” said a village elder from Kangtsung, adding that drinking water is a major concern for his household.
Faced with acute water shortage during dry seasons, an innovative idea came up. The villagers decided to harvest water from a church which stands atop of the village but they still need pumps to ensure that the water reaches homes or atleast a place where the villagers can collect water from.
“I appeal to NGOs and government agencies to install a pumping machine. If it happens, then the water problem in our village would be solved,” Kangtsung village’s chairman, T Meren Longkumer said.
Will the Nagaland Government do the needful or even after years of it getting a statehood will the people of this village depend on NGOs and Church to do what their elected government is supposed to do? Or is this a bit too much to ask?
I have a story - "CHANCE TO CHANGE"
Chulan Crix Murry: After my father's death I thought of changing my dad’s entire profile in my contact. But then I realized it's better to be untouched as to have sweet memories of our different kinda conversation through phone. As time passed by my mom used to call me through my dad's phone. One fine day it so happened that my mom called me while I was with my friends. I answered her call and after our conversation was done, one of my friends asked me why I still keep my father's picture on his contact. And before I could reply him back, he said, "Bro, I asked you that just because I don't want your dad's picture to remind you about your loss. I was concerned about you and I always want you to smile and live happily without any sorrow." Then I smiled back at him and replied that he has a point there. But among my friends one of them stood up and argued that he totally objected that concept. He further said, "Picture of your dad won't remind you of his death but it will rather give you a sweet memories of him while he was alive." He then continued, "Your dad would have surely taught you to be successful in life and so when you see his picture while your family members call you in his number, it will surely remind you of his teachings and his dreams about you." He then told me that it was my wish to choose which way to accept the right and to make a decision. At that moment I was so proud to have them.
So I just want to question to all my fellow Nagas which will be the best and the right one?? One is concerned about me and the other one is encouraging me. I know your answers. You will suggest me to accept the encouraging one as I too with a Naga mindset already accepted that.
So with this true story of mine, I would like to encourage all my fellow Nagas to make a right choice or decision. Though many advises may look right and positive, we have to choose the best and while coming to our society we mostly take the wrong decision. For example: while people try to correct us, we take it as an insult. While we see our friends or family members making a mistake we mostly support or gossip around about their mistakes rather than correcting them. While we choose our political leaders we mostly walk towards money, pride or self-interest rather than the right full leader..etc etc etc.
I believe that we Nagas have good mentalities, education, courage, kindness, smartness and many more, but the only thing we lack is the choice to make a right decision or even if we accept something so right, we never put it into action. Our state i.e. "NAGALAND FOR CHRIST" is slowly turning into "NAGALAND FOR CORRUPTION". If we look back to our Naga history, yes, I accept we are in the track of development and civilization but at the same time we are crushing down our society, our generation, our humanity, our sons’ and daughters’ future etc etc etc so again I just want to ask all our fellow Nagas "Are we gonna fight back or just continue watching until we got killed.??"
**WE ARE THE CHANCE AND WE CAN BRING CHANGES**
We can't blame anyone as we make the choice and the result lies with our decision. I cannot bring change alone nor can't you BUT "WE SURELY CAN". Let's join hands and do it together. Let's not walk in the path of greed and selfishness but rather walk in the path of right and truth.
I bravely wrote this with guts basing on the fundamental rights, i.e "freedom of speech and expression" so I apologize for any offense and also encourage our true Nagas to act not with blood and steel but with love and understanding....
THANK YOU MAY GOD BLESS NAGALAND
