DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 19 (MExN): Following the escalation of tension between the NSCN (K) and GPRN/NSCN, Naga civil society expressed their concern over the situation with several organizations issuing public statements. The Naga Hoho has made an appeal to the warring groups/ leaders to “rekindle their vision and give reconciliation a chance during this Christmas and New Year”. A press note from the Naga Hoho President and General Secretary further made an appeal to the groups to take time and trash out their differences in due course of time. The Naga Hoho also appealed to all players and agencies under Government of India to support the hard earned Reconciliation process among the Nagas and sincerely work out the modalities and “exhibit the lucid political road map so as to ensure peace in the entire North Eastern Region which in the long run will benefit the sub-continent”.
Stating that “months of psychological and political tensions between the NSCN (K) and GPRN/NSCN have resulted in the escalation of verbal abuse and inclination towards gun culture”, the Naga Hoho termed this as a “matter of grave concern for peace loving Naga people”. “There are players in different levels with evil agendas who are always sowing the seeds of hatredness among the Naga community and who are jealous of reconciliation and peaceful existence”. The Naga Hoho also mentioned that “decades of factional warfare has been on the hold for quite sometime as the politicians, mass based organizations, the media, NGOs, and church leaders across the state took their cue and denounced the unlawful act of self-defense and killings”. “Unfortunately, this chorus of disapproval has been overlooked and has blemished the joy of celebrating the birth of Christ owing to the utter indifference and bloody conflicts that has emerged between the two brotherly political groups”.
The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) also expressed displeasure over the indiscriminate firing incident between two NSCN groups at Padumphukuri and Naharbari area in Dimapur this morning. The NSF has made a fervent appeal to both the factions to exercise maximum restraint and settle their issues in a peaceful manner especially during this festive season when the entire Nagas are yearning and praying for Peace and Reconciliation, NSF General Secretary E Ejanthung Ngullie stated in a press release.
In another statement, the Western Yimchungru Hoho (WYH) has stated that it was saddened to learn that two factions of the NSCN are fighting in the densely populated area during the festive season at Naharbari village, in Dimapur. In a press release issued by the Information & Publicity Secretary, Mathew K Janger, the Hoho stated that as a tribal body of the Yimchungrus living in the western part of Nagaland it requested all factions to “solve any dispute through dialogue rather than bullets.” The WYH feels that killing of a Naga by Naga would not bring any solution but rather such killing would divide the society further. With the festive season approaching, the Hoho also stated that the slogan “Nagaland for Christ” should be “maintained in letter and spirit.” The WYH further requested all Naga political groups to adhere to the principle of peace and reconciliation.
