Naga lad at Mister Earth 2011 Guatemala

Opangtongdang Jamir, from Nagaland, will be representing India for the third edition of international Mister Earth Worldwide Pageant 2011 in Guatemala City, Central America.
 
Dimapur | July 16 : Opangtongdang Jamir, from Nagaland will be representing India for the third edition of international Mister Earth Worldwide Pageant 2011 in Guatemala City, Central America. He is officially chosen as the first Mister Earth India. Speaking with The Morung Express, Opang confirmed that he received an invitation from the producer, general manager of Mister Earth Worldwide contest 2011. The contest is scheduled to be held from October 3 to 10, 2011 at Guatemala, Central America. It was also mentioned that renowned designer Rosou Rhi is Opang’s official designer for the contest.
Hailing from Longkong village, Langpangkong range under Mokokchung district, twenty-year-old Opang has always been an active crusader. From the age of sixteen, he has been championing several causes for the society. He was the Ambassador for “Anti Tobacco and Smoking Campaign Nagaland”. He also won Mister Friendship 2010 sponsored by Lions Club Dimapur. Ecological conservation and water conservation tops in his priority list. Opang says that a platform like Mister Earth 2011 is an ideal platform to bring about changes. He advocates the need for more social events and programmes of such nature, in Nagaland too. He says he is totally committed to causes involving preserving our Earth. Opang also feels that Nagaland has been witnessing the adverse effects of Climate Change, especially in the remote parts. He opines that people are just after money, and not bothered about the need for conservation. “Do it today, tomorrow would be very late for you. He also says that it is okay to start small and advises switching off lights, turning off tap water, and try to minimize using detergents and sophisticated plastic materials, and practice less usage of polythene bags etc.
On the glamour front, Opang opines that the State government should also devote more time to the industry and use it as a way to combat unemployment problem and poverty. “People have a narrow perception. They think it’s just about clothes and makeup,” he says and that people associate the entertainment industry with sex, alcohol and craziness. Things have changed, he says. He also believes that Nagas have the talent and potential to climb high in the glamour industry and says, “It is achievable for Nagas and Northeast people. Sitting idle at home will not bring any change. It will make our society stagnant.”  
For somebody who originally dreamed to be a cabin crew in a reputed airline, it was not an easy road to success, says the 20 year old. He finished his diploma in aviation hospitality in 2010 from Aviator, Institute of Aviation Studies Dimapur. He then took part in Mr Teen India 2011, which was held on July 3rd, and had made it to the final list. However, his mother’s sudden illness forced him to withdraw from the competition. However, the young lad walked away making a big impression on the judges. Today, he says that he has absolutely no regrets about having to withdraw from the contestant as while relaxing at home, he received mail from the officials of Mister Earth 2011 Guatemala saying that he was officially selected to represent India.
Meanwhile, as he is preparing for Mister Earth 2011, starting next week, with the sponsorship of Lions Club Dimapur, he will be embarking on active causes like planting trees in and around Dimapur, meet patients of Metro Hospital Dimapur, and spent time with kids from a deaf and dumb school. Also, on July 31 he will be attending Miss LUIT at Guwahati as a special guest. After which on August 6 he will be the special guest at Friendship Day, Lions Club Dimapur.  Describing himself, Opang says that he is independent, optimistic, hardworking and sincere. His mantra in life he says is to look forward to each day. “I’m not perfect, but I look forward to perfection every day,” he candidly admits. Mister Earth 2011is a pageant different from the rest. Its mission is to develop a commitment in not only fashion and beauty, but also the ecological consciousness of each of the international contestants, actively engaging with a cause or organization in favor of ecology either at home or internationally. It also encourages the contestants to use their image and unite efforts for the improvement and conservation of environment and natural resources of our ecosystem.
