On Sunday, two state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators became ‘watchman,’ a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched "Main Bhi Chowkidar (I am a watchman too)" campaign on social media. He also urged supporters to change their names on twitter affixed with “chowkidar.”
State BJP President and Minister of Higher & Technical Education, Temjen Imna Along; and Minister of Public Health Engineering Jacob Zhimomi joined the bandwagon.
Changing his twitter handle to, 'Chowkidar Temjen Imna Along’, he tweeted: “Taking a step forward in the #MainBhiChowkidar Maha Andolan by adding “Chowkidar” on my name. I believe that all the efficient karyakartas of the BJP should take this step to protect the integrity of the nation.”
Around the same time, ‘Chowkidar Jacob Zhimomi’ also tweeted, “I stand with PM @narendramodi and every #Chowkidar of the Country. #ChowkidarPhirSe.”
The two legislators are most active on Twitter. There are 12 BJP legislators in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, some active on Twitter, but they were yet to join the bandwagon till the filing of this report.
Earlier on Saturday, the Prime minister took lead and changed the title of his Twitter account from “Narendra Modi” to "Chowkidar Narendra Modi.” BJP President like Amit Shah, senior BJP leaders and Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, JP Nadda, Harsh Vardhan and Dharmendra Pradhan soon followed suit, changing their names similarly on Twitter accounts.
According to IANS, the campaign was launched to counter Congress President Rahul Gandhi's repeated attacks on Modi and his government over various alleged malhandling of economic and defence deals and situations, with the slogan- "Chowkidar Chor Hai (watchman is a thief)".
