Discuss ways for technical cooperation in bamboo sector between Nagaland and Taiwan

NEW DELHI, MAY 28 (MExN): Nagaland State Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio today met with the Ambassador of Taiwan to India Chung Kwang Tien and discussed ways to facilitate technical cooperation in the bamboo sector and develop cultural relations.

A DIPR report informed that the meeting was held on May 28 at Nagaland House, RK Puram, New Delhi.

The key focus of the meeting was to seek technical cooperation from Taiwan for technical collaboration in the bamboo sector for value addition and its promotion.

Discussions included building a workable association whereby Taiwan will also help the bamboo industry in Nagaland state and the North East region. A proposal was set forward to establish an ‘India- Taiwan Bamboo Technical Centre’ in Dimapur.

It was envisioned that this pilot plant will be implemented by Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA) in association with Taiwan based bamboo companies. This would also entail linking up with experts in the areas of research and development, technology transfer, skill development, investments in bamboo sector, marketing, etc.

The Nagaland Chief Minister called upon experts from Taiwan to intervene and assist in augmenting the bamboo industry in Nagaland, potentially to compete in the international market. The Taiwanese Ambassador meanwhile reportedly expressed his willingness to tie up with Nagaland and further promote this industry.

It was decided that a team from Taiwan will visit Nagaland and work out modalities to establish the centre at the earliest.  Further both the parties agreed to work out details for formalising a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the earliest in order to promote this cooperation.

The meeting also deliberated on how this cooperation will foster socio-economic and cultural relations between the people of Taiwan and Nagaland.

The meeting was chaired by Abu Metha, Advisor to the Nagaland Chief Minister and attended by officials from the Embassy of Taiwan including Frank TF Tsay, Assistant Ambassador and Prof. Dr. Henry H Chen, Counsellor & Director, Science and Technology Division, Embassy of Taiwan.

Officials from Nagaland State included Jyoti Kailash, Principal Resident Commissioner; Imtirenla Jamir, Mission Director, NBDA; Kethosituo Sekhose, Deputy Resident Commissioner, Nagaland House, New Delhi; Kamesh Salam, President of South Asia Bamboo Foundation & Consultant, NBDA; and Dr Tolto Metha, Team Member, NBDA.
