Dimapur, September 28 (MExN): The District Congress Committees (DCCs) of Dimapur, Mokokchung, Wokha, Peren, Longleng, Noklak and Tuensang today held protests across their respective districts against the alleged “high-handedness and arbitrary” functioning of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
The DCCs expressed grave concern over what they described as actions that could undermine public confidence in the independence, transparency and credibility of the electoral process, according to a press release from the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee.
The right to vote is a fundamental pillar of India’s democratic system and every electoral process must be conducted with complete transparency, impartiality and accountability, they contended.
The DCCs further reiterated that no individual holding constitutional office should be above scrutiny or the law, and any allegation of wrongdoing must be examined through legally established processes, with responsibility fixed wherever violations are established.
As per the release, the protests in Nagaland form part of the wider nationwide mobilisation campaign of the Indian National Congress calling for accountability in the functioning of the CEC and raising serious concerns over decisions relating to electoral rolls and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
The party is demanding the immediate resignation and removal of the CEC, along with an independent review of decisions and electoral-roll changes taken under his tenure.
Similar demonstrations were held in several parts of the country on September 25, with Congress workers demanding the CEC’s resignation, removal and arrest.
