DIMAPUR, JULY 10 (MExN): A policeman from Nagaland and two civilians were detained at the Kolkata airport after Customs officers detected a large amount of cash from their possession. According to a PTI report, the three had landed at the Kolkata airport from Dimapur with Rs. 92 lakh in cash. Constable Rajendra Pillai, Anil Kumar and a businessman Shashi Kumar were detained after they failed to explain to Customs why they were carrying that much amount, the PTI report stated.
PRO of the Nagaland Police Headquarters, ST Sangtam when contacted Sunday evening identified the policeman as one ‘Naik’ Rajendran of the Nagaland Police. He was detained with two other persons, said to be businessmen, Friday last at the airport. According to the PRO the policeman was on leave and was on way to his native place in Kerala. The PRO downplayed the possibility of a constable carrying such a large amount averring that the money might belong to the other two persons, who are understood to be the constable’s mutual friends. They are still in the custody of the Customs. Further details are awaited, he said. According to the norms flight passengers are required to formally declare the amount of cash they are carrying supported by necessary documents.
