Dimapur, October 23 (MExN): Peace Channel, an initiative of the Catholic Church, has expressed concern over the recent conflict involving the Tikhir and Yimkhiung communities in Pungro in Kiphire district and Shamator district, appealing to both communities to exercise restraint and prevent further escalation.
In a statement, the organisation expressed solidarity with all those affected by the conflict and called for a peaceful resolution of the issue. As part of its humanitarian commitment, Peace Channel said it was planning to visit the affected areas and provide school uniforms, school bags and educational materials to children affected by the conflict.
The initiative aims to support the children's education and help restore a sense of normalcy amid the prevailing situation, it said. The organisation urged the concerned tribal bodies to resolve the issue through peaceful dialogue and mediation, stating that dialogue would provide an opportunity to express grievances, clarify misunderstandings and rebuild trust.
It also emphasised the role of mutually accepted and impartial facilitators in helping the parties identify common ground and work towards a peaceful resolution.
Sustainable peace required a willingness to listen, acknowledge concerns and resolve differences without violence, the statement said.
Peace Channel further appealed to community leaders, civil society organisations and the public to promote responsible communication, discourage inflammatory statements and create an environment conducive to reconciliation.
Emphasising the importance of peaceful coexistence, the organisation said peace must be built through understanding, mutual respect and a shared commitment to harmony.
It called upon both communities to choose dialogue over confrontation and reconciliation over division, stressing the need to safeguard the well-being of present and future generations.
