Dimapur, January 24 (MExN): The Government of Nagaland has appealed to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, to take note of activities of the Assam militant group, Adivasi National Liberation Army (ANLA) on the disputed Assam-Nagaland border. A copy of an official letter addressed to the Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, from Chief Secretary of Nagaland Lalthara, was received here today.
The government of Nagaland informed that the ANLA is camped in a disputed area bordering Assam and Nagaland and near Ralan sub-division of Wokha district in Nagaland. The government said that the outfit is likely to enter into a ceasefire agreement with the Assam government. “There is serious apprehension that under the proposed ceasefire agreement, the designated camp for the outfit may be decided and will probably be located within the site presently occupied by them, in the disputed border area,” the letter said.
The Nagaland government stated – “Under the above circumstances, it may be appreciated that such an agreement between the Assam government and ANLA will include amongst other terms the settlement of the ANLA cadres. In this regard it is to be stated that providing a designated camp of any kind of settlement within the disputed border area of Assam and Nagaland, will amount to a clear case of violation of the interim agreements signed between the two state governments.”
The letter reminded that the matter concerning the disputed area is currently sub-judice in the Supreme Court of India. “Such an action is thus likely to vitiate the peace and tranquility in the area which will not be in the interest of either of the state governments.” In view of the seriousness of the issue, the government of Nagaland has asked the central government to consider the situation and act on it.
