Dimapur, July 15 (MExN): Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio has announced a cash award of Rs. 3 lakhs to archer Chekrovolu Swuro for her medal winning performance at the World Championships in Turin, Italy. Her performance has also qualified her to receive the cash incentive of Rs. 2 lakhs given to any Naga sportsperson winning silver medal at a world championship/world cup event of a recognized Olympic event, as part of the state sports awards.
Rio congratulated the Indian women’s archery team, of which Swuro was also a member, and won the silver medal at the world championships. Rio, also the President of the Nagaland Olympic Association, especially congratulated Chekrovolu Swuro, winning the silver medal, enabling the Indian team to qualify for the forthcoming London Olympic Games in 2012.
The chief minister met Chekrovolu Swuro this evening at his residential office. The chief minister congratulated the archer and wished her all success in her forthcoming competitions. Chekrovolü Swuro presented her medal before the chief minister during the meeting. The chief minister expressed genuine happiness over the achievement of Swuro. “It is like the parents getting repaid by children with results and achievements”, he said, when the archer expressed her gratitude to the chief minister for all the support to her.
“The chief minister keenly enquired about professional problems and facilities and assured to explore avenues for improvements and for setting up facilities. He disclosed his intention to meet and discuss programmes with Shri. Vijay Malhotra, MP, President of the Archery Federation of India, during visit to Delhi,” a note from the IPR informed today. Swuro would be leaving for the United States in a few days time, to represent the country, and shall return in August.
