Nagaland honour teachers, 32 receives state award

Nagaland today paid glowing respect and honour to teachers for their immense contribution towards the growth of education, and making a progressive society.

In Nagaland, the literacy rate stands at 67.11% at present. In state level Teachers’ Day celebration held here at the Kohima Local Ground, Minister for Higher Education Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu today gave away the prestigious state award to 32 teachers (11 from secondary, 15-elementary and 6 private) in recognition of their sincerity, dedication and devotion to their duty.

Dr. Liezietsu appreciated the enormous contribution of teachers and recognized their role in shaping the destiny of children. Stating that teachers are the builder of the nation, he said they are specialist in their fields and have been imparting the students with their knowledge. “Teaching profession is the most respectable profession, but it demands hard work, sincerity and dedication,” Dr. Liezietsu said and hoped that the teachers will justify the same as expected by the society.

Stating that the state government is more concerned with the development of imparting quality education in the state, he felt that teachers must also participate in the process of decision making. Stating that the purpose of education is to free us from the shadows of ignorance and prejudice, Dr. Liezietsu exhorted the teachers to move forward with the varied modern technologies.
Appreciating and recognizing the important role played by teachers in shaping the life of the students, Dr. Liezietsu joined the students in saluting all the teachers on the occasion.

Later, the Minister declared September 6 as holiday for all schools across Nagaland.
Retired Director, School Education, Prof. Talitsuba in his exhortation said that education has been a mighty instrument in transforming human lives all over the world and lauded the teachers both past and present for working tirelessly in the process of spreading and imparting education. He pointed out that teachers have tremendous opportunities and huge responsibilities in imparting quality education to the students, in order to make Nagaland a progressive state.

He further said that the role of teachers supported by parents in preparing the life of the students has been in-evitable and called upon the teachers to establish cordial relationship with the parents of the students. “Teachers are to act as moral developer of the students and are expected to work as agents of social change and modernization”, he maintained.

In message read out on the occasion, Nagaland’ Governor Nikhil Kumar said “Good teachers are essential for the effective functioning of education systems and for improving quality of the learning processes. Teaching is considered as the noblest profession as teachers mould the young minds into thinking citizens and equip them with knowledge, skills and attitude to take care of the society tomorrow.”

Taking the platform of teacher’s day today, Kumar also appealed to the people to recognize the indispensable and self sacrificing role played by the teachers in imparting quality education in the state.

Stating that teachers occupied a coveted position, describing them as “movers and shakers” of the humanity, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said that teachers must continue to uphold the noble traditions of teachers by maintaining the highest qualities and standards of personal integrity and honesty.

“ It needs to be realized that their influence on their students is not limited or confined to the class rooms but it permeates to all the aspects of life including their personal lives,” he said adding that, for which the teachers should try to become impeachable role-models for the young generation toward realizing “our dreams for a better world.”

He also congratulated the teachers for having chosen the most dignified profession and prayed that God bless them with the strength to remain steadfast and committed to the teachings of value oriented education to the future generation. Messages from President of India Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union minister for human resource development Kapil Sibal and union minister of state for human resource development D. Purandeswari also read out on the occasion.

The function was chaired by Vipralhou, director, SCERT. Vote of thanks was proposed by V. Meyase, joint director, School Education. Altogether, 12 teachers received financial assistance on the occasion. They are, Bendanglemla, GPS Marekong, Y. Moasutsung, GHS Kubolong, Talilemba, GPS Aliba ‘B,’ Rosa Yanthan, GHS Englan, Yinavungo Thungoe, GPS Longsa Sector B, T.L. Meren Jamir, GHS Changtongya, Khrielhouru Miario, GPS Phekerukriema, Manoj Kumar, GMS Tuophema, D.N. Bhattacharjee, DEO Kohima, Salome K. Sankhil, Step by Step School Zunheboto, Ghosheli, GHS Akuluto and Heiliang, GPS Punglwa B.

Two teachers from the state conferred with the National teachers’ award include; Benjungyapang, GPS Medical Colony Mokokchung and Kevingulie Kuotsu, Japan Riba, Phek District. (with inputs from DIPR)
