Nagaland horticulture department adds aesthetic beauty to office building

As part of its initiative to support the flower growers of the state, Nagaland’s horticulture department has introduced floral arrangement in the Directorate office building in the state capital Kohima.

Such an initiative not only adds to the aesthetic beauty of the office but is also a source of income for the flower growers, thereby encouraging them and has been well received by people from all walks of life.

This was stated in the Annual Administrative Report 2020-21 of horticulture department, Nagaland.

The department in its report stated that one of the most often ignored aspects in many of the offices of the state is landscaping of the office premise.

“No office or business is exempt from the rules of decent aesthetics and environmental stewardship and hardly anyone can deny the importance of visual appeal and aesthetics because we as humans are visual creatures and we tend to form first impressions quickly,” the report stated.

Landscape maintenance is a great proactive step towards promoting the wellness of employees in the work place and makes dull areas pleasing and turns offices building into warm, liveable space,” the report stated.

It stated that proper landscaping of the office premises has become a necessity in view of the various positive impacts it has on the well being of the state’s employees as well as the public visiting the offices.

In Nagaland, the cultivation of flowers is an age-old occupation which was confined to a few women who grew flowers as a part time activity.

However, the situation has changed with the introduction of commercial floriculture since 2005-06 under HMNEH.

Today, floriculture has become a commercial activity which has help up build the entrepreneurial skills of the people especially the women and unemployed youths who grow different flowers both for domestic market and export purposes, the report stated.

Realizing the importance and role that floriculture has played in empowering women and as a sources of employment, the department has been organizing the Floral Galleria annually coinciding with the Hornbill Festival of Nagaland, where flower growers of the state has been given a platform for showcasing the different flowers grown and an opportunity for a seller-buyers meet for creating between marketing linkages.
